Daily writing prompt
Describe one simple thing you do that brings joy to your life.

I had to think hard on this because it’s not one thing specifically, and not particularly simple because it took time to get to. But I would have to say it’s my current morning routine.

I get up a little after dawn usually (the birds are quick to wake us all up), greet the dogs, get the cat food ready and call her to the porch, then while she’s eating, I take the dogs out to pee from the front door (this prevents them from trying to chase her and yank me down the steps and hurt myself).

We walk a bit up and down the road for the peace and quiet, listening to the sounds of the neighborhood waking up. Then when they’re ready, I put them on their tether lines in the front so they can enjoy the outside and people-watch. I feed my birds and start the coffee maker, then I go work out in my shed (the cat comes with). When done, I shut it all down, coax the cat out of the rafters with dental treats, get the dogs to come in the house.

I get my first cup of coffee after making sure the dogs have plenty of food, then sit at my dining table with my journal for half an hour (one of the dogs likes to lay down on a pad near me or right under my feet while I write). After that, I’m ready for another cup of coffee and whatever comes for the rest of the day.

When I stick with this routine, I feel like I can do anything. I can feel momentum for positive life changes come about with every step I take, and it’s just wonderful. Even if the rest of the day isn’t so great, I had a good few hours in the morning that tell me “yes, waking up was worth it.”
